A Big River Runs Through It

Say you had the honour of naming a major geographical landmark, such as a river.

What would you call it?

I, for one, would call it "the river of ten-thousand years of peace and hapiness"

But I may be half-Chinese.

The guy who did the honours in Osaka was a bit more straightforward in personality, probably.

He named it Oukawa.

That means "Big River".

But then "Osaka" means "big slope".

There isn't any big slope in Osaka.

And the river would likely better be named "fair-sized river".

Nice in the evening, though.

  1. japan never had romans, normans, vikings, etc. etc. to complicate the derived meaning or their place names. just lots of little pictures.
